DESCRIPTION OF INTERESTS

As an academic cardiac electrophysiologist, I am actively involved in patient care, cutting edge research and education related to heart rhythm diseases. Based on my strong academic, educational and clinical practice background in cardiac electrophysiology, I combine my clinical practice and scientific research in the areas of supraventricular arrhythmias, ventricular arrhythmias, sudden cardiac arrest and implantable cardiac electrical device therapies.

As a clinician, my patient care focuses on the treatment of complex arrhythmias including supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias, and device therapies (pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators) in adult patients. I see patients at the Dent Tower in Amherst and perform procedures such as catheter ablation and cardiac electrical device placement in the Electrophysiology Laboratory at the Buffalo General Medical Center.

As a scientist, my research focuses on the investigation of the mechanisms and treatment of heart rhythm disturbances including atrial fibrillation, pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments for atrial fibrillation, interrelation in supraventricular arrhythmias, the role of mitochondria driven cardiomyocyte energetics and metabolism in the mechanism of arrhythmias, preventative strategies against oxidative and metabolic stress induced arrhythmias, sudden cardiac arrest with ventricular arrhythmias and implantable device therapies. I am also actively involved in the education of medical students, residents and fellows.

I have contributed extensively to the field of cardiac electrophysiology with original research findings presented at numerous national and international scientific meetings and published in prestigious journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, the Journal of Molecular and Cellular Cardiology, Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, American Journal of Cardiology, American Journal of Physiology and Heart Rhythm. My contributions were recognized with several awards including AHA postdoctoral fellowship award, American College of Cardiology Foundation Award, Heart Rhythm Society Furman Fund Scholarship Award. I am a member of American Heart Association Scientific Council, American College of Cardiology, Heart Rhythm Society and the American Medical Association.
