Professional Summary:

Dr. Kevin Hughes II is a board-certified family medicine physician and serves as Vice Chair of Clinical Operations at UBMD Primary Care. His academic and clinical leadership is rooted in advancing patient-centered primary care through population health innovation, quality improvement, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Dr. Hughes’s scholarly interests focus on chronic disease management, preventive health strategies, and the operational transformation of primary care delivery systems.

Dr. Hughes is actively engaged in research aimed at improving the quality and effectiveness of care, particularly in underserved and non-adherent patient populations. He leads initiatives focused on standardized workflows for chronic disease management, integration of social determinants of health into care plans, and alignment of preventive services with USPSTF and HEDIS guidelines. His work has emphasized practical, real-world applications of quality improvement science within academic medicine.

In collaboration with the University at Buffalo School of Public Health and Health Professions and the Department of Community Health and Health Behavior, Dr. Hughes is co-investigator on a grant-funded study titled “Interventions to Decrease Cancer Information Avoidance.” This research aims to addresses the widespread problem of health information avoidance—specifically related to colorectal cancer screening. The project includes randomized controlled and pragmatic trials to evaluate a video-based strategy designed to reduce defensive information avoidance and increase screening uptake. The intervention is grounded in a robust theoretical framework and is intended to be scalable across multiple delivery platforms, including email, patient portals, mobile messaging, and in-office settings. Dr. Hughes is leading the integration of this research into UBMD Primary Care’s clinical workflows, directly connecting academic research with improved patient outcomes.

In addition to his research and operational leadership, Dr. Hughes mentors medical students and residents through the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. He is pursuing advanced leadership training through the American Association for Physician Leadership and is committed to building the future of primary care through evidence-based practice transformation and system-wide collaboration.
