Professional Summary:

My research concentrates on understanding mechanisms that underlie hypertension, kidney disease, and kidney development. In the laboratory, I have developed methods to isolate renal endothelial cells from mice. Using the primary culture cells, I have studied roles of endothelium in acute kidney injury and intracellular calcium signaling. The animal models what I have used include not limited to the bullfrog, mice, rats, rabbits, and monkeys.
My current research proposal at UB focuses on detecting the gene(s) responsible for congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT). If the mutation of gene(s) is identified, my next step is to apply gene editing technique, attempting to repair the defect on the laboratory bench. The ultimate goal is to use gene therapy effectively to delay disease progression in children with CAKUT and improve the outcomes.
My clinical focus has been the care and management of patients with CAKUT, complex glomerular and autoimmune disease, and end stage of renal disease (ESRD) who undergo dialysis or kidney transplant. I serve as attending physician on the transplant clinic for UBMD pediatrics. I am also an attending physician on the inpatient renal service at Oishei Children Hospital, Buffalo NY.
As an educator, I am committed to the career development of the students, trainees and faculty working with me in the laboratory, in medical school class rooms (live vs virtual), in clinical areas and hospital patients’ bedsides. I introduced them to give presentation at national conferences, and published case reports on peer-reviewed journals. Over the course of my career, I have mentored medical students, graduate students, residents and follows. Some have gone on to become academic physicians. Through my commitment, I help ensure continued quality improvement in nephrology training, in multiple institutions including Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Buffalo NY.
